Why Should You Visit the Oral Hygienist Regularly?
Visiting the oral hygienist regularly is crucial for maintaining optimal oral health. While brushing and flossing at home are essential, they can’t always remove all the plaque and tartar that accumulate on your teeth and gums. Our hygienists are trained to perform professional cleanings that eliminate these harmful deposits, reducing your risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Regular visits also allow us to monitor your oral health and provide personalized advice to help you maintain a healthy smile.
What Can You Expect During an Oral Hygiene Appointment?
During your oral hygiene appointment, you can expect a thorough and friendly experience. Here’s what typically happens:
- Medical History Review: We’ll start by discussing any changes in your health or medications since your last visit.
- Examination: The hygienist will examine your teeth and gums for any signs of issues, like gum disease or cavities. (note not all cavities are evident on examination and dental x-rays and examination by your dentist is still essential)
- Professional Cleaning: Using specialized tools, we’ll remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth and along the gum line. This may include scaling and polishing your teeth for a smooth, clean finish.
- Fluoride Treatment (if needed): We might apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen your enamel and further protect against cavities.
- Oral Health Education: You’ll receive personalized tips on improving your at-home oral care routine, including brushing and flossing techniques.
- Teeth Whitening: We offer a full range of professional teeth whitening options to suit your needs and lifestyle, whether you’re looking for immediate results or a more gradual approach. Chat to our Hygienist to see which option is best suited for you!
- Fissure Sealants: Fissure sealants help protect children’s teeth—especially the back molars—where grooves and pits (called fissures) are deeper and harder to clean. These areas are more likely to trap food and plaque, which can lead to tooth decay.
A fissure sealant is a thin, protective painless coating that is carefully painted onto these grooves. It acts like a barrier, keeping bacteria and food out.
How Often Should Dental Check-Ups Be Done?
For most people, it’s recommended to have dental check-ups and cleanings every six months. This regularity helps us catch any potential issues early and maintain your oral health effectively. However, if you have specific concerns, such as gum disease or a higher risk of cavities, we may suggest more frequent visits. Your oral health needs are unique, and we’ll work together to determine the best schedule for you.
What Age Should Kids Start Seeing the Oral Hygienist?
The American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Early visits help establish a positive relationship with dental care and allow us to monitor their oral health as they grow. Regular visits from a young age also help educate both children and parents about good oral hygiene practices, setting the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles!
