Dental Bridges
If you’ve lost a tooth but aren’t able to get a dental implant, or perhaps your health history precludes you from being able to get an implant, a bridge may be the treatment for you!
A dental bridge consists of one or multiple crowns spanning the gap between remaining teeth. This permanent fixture is typically made zirconia and fits over existing teeth. Bridges can solve the same problems as implants, and is an alternative option for patients, depending on their particular needs and circumstances.
A few appointments at Quest Dental are typically required for adjustments and fittings, with a final appointment to have the bridge cemented permanently.
With proper care, a bridge can last for years.
YOU ARE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A BRIDGE IF:
- You lost a tooth and both teeth on each side already have crowns or are already heavily restored.
- You have a complicated medical history and have trouble healing.
- You have financial limitations and a dental implant is too costly.
WHAT TO EXPECT
2 Appointments
FIRST APPOINTMENT
At your first appointment at Quest Dental we will administer full local anaesthesia for the tooth being treated. We will then prepare the retainer teeth conservatively to create room for the bridge.
After careful assessment of the shape and contour, a 3D scan or impression of will be done of the prepared, retainer teeth and gum where the missing tooth will be replaced. This will allow the lab ceramist to create and calibrate a bridge spanning the “gap” that looks and feels as close to your natural teeth as possible.
A temporary bridge is then created, polished and cemented, in our rooms before you leave. During the next two weeks, you’ll want to avoid sticky foods near the treated area, so the temporary bridge stays put. If the temporary bridge dislodges, try to replace it as fast as possible, and come visit if you can’t get it back in. The purpose of temporary crowns is to protect you from sensitivity and keep the gums from rolling over the prepared margins of the teeth.
SECOND APPOINTMENT
During your second visit, the temporary bridge will be removed and the final bridge will be tried in and examined for perfection. We will take a dental X-ray to ensure quality fit and aesthetic approval. An adhesive is then applied to the retainer teeth and a cement will be luted onto the interior of the bridge. Any excess cement will be removed. You’ll be provided with all the necessary instruction to take proper care of your new bridge!
